Skilling is today considered as an answer for a future for the youth. Various initiatives on placement linked skill development has to a large extent changed the way people look at higher education. Certain sectors like Retail, hospitality, beauty and wellness, Security Services have seen mass exodus of youth from rural and semi-urban areas to industrially developed cities and towns.
The question that arises is can skilling lead to self –employment? To start a venture, along with skills, there are other support like marketing and credit support required from the eco-system.There is also a need for further support and marketing linkages. Referring particularly to the handloom and handicraft sector,a skilled youth to start his/her enterprise needs further practice and handholding on size/finish and maintaining technical specification. Moreover, it is not within a period of three months that a youth acquires a skill and develop a marketable product. There is a gestation period from being skilled and staring a venture. The gestation period is at least six months During this period,in the initial support provided through handholding and mentoring is of prime importance. Incubation centres can be the bridge between skilling and enterprise creation.
Experiments with few trainees at thev Gems and Jewellry Incubation Centre and the Readymade garment centre at IIE has yielded positive results
As a part of Skill Development Programme under CSR initiative of OIL,trainees mostly school and college dropouts from Tinsukia nad Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam had undergone skill training at the Jewellery Incubation Centre at IIE. While many got placed in Jewellery showrooms and workshops ,few of them got motivated to start their own enterprise using the skills acquired at the centre.
Experimented with the first group of five trainees .T hey were given an opportunity to stay back.during the first two months,they were provided with free boarding and lodging and as tipend for meeting out of pocket expenses .During this period,the emphasis was on finishing and on market knowledge .In the next two months there was no stipend being given.but facilitated to procure orders.
In the fifth and the sixth month,the only support provided was lodging facility and use of tools and machines at the centre.by the end of six months they were self employed.

Born in the year 1992, Mr. Sumitra Deori is from a small village named Chapakhua of Sadiya and he is the eldest son among the three children of Mr. Padma Deori, who is a farmer. Even though he was born in a farmer’s family, amidst limitations and hardships, Sumitra was an extremely enterprising person right from his childhood. As a teenager, he started helping his father in the family farming activities. He also helped his younger brother, who is a college dropout and was not good in studies, to set up a printing shop at Sadiya town. Since his school days he dreamt of setting up a shop as in starting his own enterprise in order to support his family and earn his livelihood. He completed his higher secondary in the year 2011 and joined college but did not complete his graduation, since he was not much interested in studies. Thereafter, in the year 2013 he joined Dibrugarh Gas Cracker project as a project helper with a monthly salary of Rs. 6,000. But somehow he was not happy with his job and hence he resigned from it and began working to start his own venture. Sumitra knew that for starting any venture everyone require some kind of skill and confidence and unfortunately, in his locality, he could not find any such opportunity. Sumitra is very close to his mother Ms. Buli Deori. He used to tell his mother about his wish of doing something on his own. His mother kept supporting him and encouraging him and one fine day in October 2014 he heard about the OIL sponsored jewellery designing course and somehow he felt that this was what he wanted to do in his life and immediately came to Guwahati for joining the Jewellery training program at Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE).
During the training program all the trainees were taken for exposure visit to Jaipur and were taught how to go for market linkages. After completing the three-month training program he went back to his home and tried to figure out what to do next. He had not yet made up his mind regarding earning his livelihood through jewellery making. At the beginning of the training program he was not quite interested in the program and got properly engaged in the activity only during the course of the program and gradually discovered that he was getting good at it. Sumitra got the opportunity of being one of the five participants who were recalled for further training and handholding support from the batch of 30 participants because to his superior performance during the training program in jewelley designing. He was pleasantly surprised and happy for being recalled because of his skills. After few months he was also happy to know that they were earning a stipend of Rs. 6,000/- per month for around six months. Since last one year Sumitra has been staying with IIE and has continued to learn new techniques of making a variety of products like Assamese jewellery, copper etching jewellery, show pieces, souvenir items like Rhino tie pin, brooch pins, book marks, etc. During this incubation phase, he also managed to get some orders for himself and was able to establish market linkages for his products with the help of IIE and this helped him in earning a decent amount of money and thus making him financially independent. Now Sumitra is earning on his own and he is confident enough to set up his own venture as he has developed a customer base for his products and has also learnt and gained the confidence to establish new market linkages on his own. Sumitra has now managed to procure orders for Assamese jewellery at a regular basis.
The last few months of his getting involved in producing handcrafted jewelleries, he today realizes that the jewellery training programme has greatly helped him in a getting new direction towards his life and career. He enjoys making Assamese jewellery as well as show pieces and pen-stands and from last week of February 2016 he has started his venture in group mode in Bhetapara, Guwahati for selling his products. Today he is on the verge of fulfilling his dream with the help of the training provided by IIE. He has applied for the DIC tool kit and has also planned to apply for a loan and is eagerly looking forward to receiving the DIC tool kit which can help him in realizing the dream that he has for himself in the jewellery sector.

Dreaming to be a Kabaddi player Mr. Prem Uday Dhan was born in the year1991 in a small village named Doghugalani of Dibrugarh district and he is the only son of Mr. Pradip Dhan, who has his own piggery firm. His mother was a school teacher but she left her job when Prem was in class V. Prem from his childhood wants to be a Kabaddi player and participated in Dibrugarh district Kabaddi championship. But in the year 2007 when he was in tenth standard his left leg was injured and could not fulfill his dream to be a player.
After he completed his HSLC in the year 2008 he joined a computer diploma course in Assian Pacific I Learn Training Centre and after his training he joined the same institute as a trainer for monthly salary of 3,500/-. After two years of his trainer experience he joined NEIITA, Dibrugarh as a Centre Manager till 2014 for a monthly salary of Rs. 5,000/-. During that period that salary amount was sufficient for him but somehow he felt that he has to learn some new thing which can be his unique identity. He heard some free Skill Development courses which can provide job opportunity but he no longer wants to be an employee he dream to be an employer. One fine day in October 2014 one of his good friends informed him about the OIL sponsored jewellery designing course and somehow he felt that this was what he wanted to do in his life and immediately came to Guwahati for joining the Jewellery training program at Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE).
Prem and Sumitra were in the same batch of Jewellery training programme and the exposure visit to Jaipur was also an eye opener for Prem. He built linkages with few supplier who can supply him beads whenever he required. He bought lots of beads from Jaipur and other jewellery accessories and made beautiful jewelleries. During the end of their training programme OIL has sponsored an exhibition in OIL campus and their Prem has provode more than 50 pieces of jewelleries and earn a good amount of profit. He thought after coplition of the training programme, with that profit amount he will start his own tiny jewellery venture. And after completing the three-month training program he went back to his home and tried to start his own tiny jewellery venture. From the beginning of the training program he was very enthusiastic to learn new things as this course was very new to him and he found it very interesting. Prem got the opportunity of being one of the five participants who were recalled for further training and handholding support from the batch of 30 participants because to his superior performance during the training program in jewelley designing. He was pleasantly surprised and happy for being recalled because of his skills. After few months he was also happy to know that they were earning a stipend of Rs. 6,000/- per month for around six months. Born in the year 1992 in a small village named Deubhoria gaon of Digboi Mr. Rukma Gogoi is the only child of Mr. Girin Gogoi and Ms. Nilima Gogoi. His father is a Fitter in Digboi and they have 10 bigha of tea garden in his residence. Though financially they were not poor but he did not give value to money. He was not good in studies and somehow completed he completed class X. From the early stage of his childhood he wants to become an entrepreneur and after completion of his studies he tried different businesses but could not succeed just waste his parent’s money. His parent’s were furious about his insincere habit and one day his father heard about the OIL sponsored jewellery designing course and somehow his father felt that this course can help his son. First time Rukma hesitate to come to Guwahati but due to his parent’s force he came to Guwahati for joining the Jewellery training program at Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) during the FY 2014-15.

Born in the year 1994 in a small village named Udaynagar of Sadiya Mr. Priyojyoti Deori is the first child of Mr. Bhuban Deori and Ms. Ranimai Deori. His father is a farmer and his mother is an Asha worker. Both his parents’ are supportive to their children. From his childhood Priyo likes to read news papers and a very shy type of person. He completed his HSSLC and got 2nd division. After that he wants to do BA but due to some problem he drop the idea of further studies. After his studies he started coaching for 15 to 20 students and could earn around Rs. 5,000/- but he wanted to do something different and joined a mobile repairing course and paid Rs. 3,500/- as an admission amount but he was not satisfied with that training programme and after 15 days of the training programme he heard about the OIL sponsored jewellery designing course and thought that he can joined the course as it was totally free. But at the beginning he was hesitate to come to Guwahati but his parents’ force him to come to Guwahati for joining the Jewellery training program at Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE).
Sumitra and Priya are from same place and both were good friends during the training programme and both were not interested in the training programme at the beginning but later on both are expertise in jewellery making. Somehow he felt that this was what he wanted to do in his life and immediately came to Guwahati for joining the Jewellery training program at Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE).
